Roy is a former BJP national vice-president was elected MLA from the Krishnanagar (North) constituency. Roy had joined Trinamool after the 2021 assembly elections in the presence of Trinamool Supremo Mamata Banerjee. The Speaker had chosen Roy as head of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) despite the defection, following which Opposition BJP filed a case which is still being heard by the Speaker. Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari had also moved to Calcutta High Court as Speaker Biman Banerjee had observed that Mukul Roy will continue as PAC chairman.
“We have presented our view in front of the Speaker today on behalf of Mukul Roy. Roy is a BJP MLA and he had gone to Trinamool office to meet his dear ones when his wife was admitted in the hospital. He had ill health and was dejected due to his family reasons,” Lawyer of Mukul Roy said after the hearing.
Adhikari moved to Calcutta High Court on the PAC chairmanship issue and implementation of anti-defection law against Roy.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to hear a plea filed by Adhikari against an order of the Speaker dismissing his petition seeking Roy’s disqualification as an MLA. A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai asked Adhikari to move to Calcutta High Court against the Speaker’s decision.
