We’re fuming over drivers who block our road – parking spaces are a mile away
RESIDENTS are raging over selfish motorists who block up their street.
The council has vowed to build extra spaces to combat the traffic issue – but they’re on a “quiet” road one mile away, locals claim.
They’ve dubbed the council in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, “a joke” for investing in the new spots on a street that has “nothing wrong with it”.
Jim Reid, 76 – who has lived on busy North Dryburgh Road for 35 years – blasted: “It’s a disgrace, it’s terrible.
“My biggest problem is that people get jealous because I have a driveway – but people park in front of it and I can’t get out.
“It’s crazy, why are [the council] not doing something about it?
“I don’t blame the people parking on the pavement but if somebody’s got a wheelchair it means they’ve got to go out onto the road, that’s a disgrace.
“The road’s too narrow.
“Most people turn their wing mirrors in because they get knocked off constantly.”
A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said the new spaces on Newark Drive “meet demand from residents”.
But locals disagree.
Gary Wilson, 36, said the high volume of traffic is leading to cars being damaged.
He said: “Look at the state of the motors up there. My car got hit not long ago and it cost me £1k worth of damage.
“They should put more bays in, there’s constantly something happening like peoples wing mirrors coming off.
“I definitely think the council should be doing a lot more.
“Newark Drive is just along the road from my mum’s house.
“It’s just a wee quiet street there’s nothing wrong with it.”
Hugh Duffy, 68, said: “The parking isn’t adequate. At the same time I agree with the people who [have concerns about] doing away with the green belt and where kids play and all that, which isn’t fair on the kids.
“But I mean what do you do, do you make kids safe or do you let them play out in the grass?
“North Lanarkshire Council as a whole is a joke.”

Stay-at-home mum Mandy Stewart, 37, said: “There’s not enough parking for the amount of cars and there’s plenty of room for more parking.
“And why the council doesn’t, whether it’s down to money, I don’t know.
“There’s going to be an accident one day. On North Dryburgh Road it’s terrible.
“When there’s cars parked adjacent to one another you think you’re going to hit somebody else’s car.
“There’s plenty of room. I don’t know why they make it a double car park.”
A council spokesperson said: “A number of streets in Coltness were identified as possible locations for additional parking spaces, to meet demand from local residents.
“Following consultation with tenants in surrounding homes, additional spaces are being created at Newark Drive as well as the spaces already created in Maxton Crescent and North Dryburgh Road.”
