Wellens wants Leyton Orient fans to ‘dig in more than ever’
Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens has called on the club’s fans to help them get back on track against Doncaster Rovers this weekend.
O’s took just two points from a possible nine over the festive period, failing to score in all three matches against Stevenage, Newport County and Northampton Town.
They have seen their lead at the top of the League Two table cut to just two points as a result but will be hoping to return to winning ways against a Doncaster side sitting just outside the play-off spots.
“Excellent turnout [at Northampton], we’re gutted we couldn’t get a result for them, but I think a lot of things went against us on the day,” Wellens told the club website, referring to an injury to Dan Happe and late red card for Omar Beckles among other things.
“We just have to lick our wounds and go again. We’re back home, can’t wait and I did say at the start of the season, there will be periods this season when I don’t need them, because I’m full of confidence, and the players don’t need them because they’re flying and full of confidence.
“But then there will be stages of the season where suspensions, injuries, because it comes, it’s just the way it works, and then we’re going to need them.
“This is the part of the season the fans need to dig in, to support us and even if there’s lulls in games, we need their support more than ever tomorrow because it’s that type of season where things have gone against us.
“We need them tomorrow, we need a full house in our area, in our home support, so come, support us like you have, but we need that five per cent extra off you because it’s a big four/five games coming for us and we need them.”
Centre-back Happe limped off in the firt half at Sixfields and could now miss the rest of the season, while defensive partner Beckles faces a three-game suspension for his straight red card.
“He’s probably going to be done for the season, and we’re all gutted,” said Wellens of Happe.
“In his time with me, he’s turned from a boy to a man, and this is another chance to build his resilience.”
Director of football Martin Ling spoke earlier in the week about the club’s hopes for the January transfer window and Wellens admitted a central defender was an absolute priority.
“We need someone in, but it won’t be before this weekend,” he added.
“It’s important that we get the right one in, that will fit into the way that we play.”
