Wellens: To be champions is fantastic for Leyton Orient

Promotion had already been secured in midweek, but a George Moncur penalty early in the second half and substitute Charlie Kelman’s effort sealed a 2-0 win over Crewe to ensure they would go up as champions.

And Wellens hailed the journey the club has been on since his arrival a little over a year ago.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to manage this club the last 13-14 months,” he told the club website.

“The journey we’ve been on from 20th in the league to now be champions is a fantastic journey.

“Everybody at the club deserves it, it’s been so smooth from bottom to top, so smooth, which has made my job easier, and we deserve it.

“For me we played the best football, we’ve been the best in terms of ability, tactical, we’ve been top for a long, long time and we deserve it.”

Brisbane Road was bouncing with another big crowd and the party atmosphere got into full swing at the final whistle.

But Wellens is hoping the club can plan things a bit better when they welcome Stockport County for their last home fixture of 2022-23 next season.

“I actually feel sorry for the players because they went in,” he added.

“We got told to take the players in, and myself and the staff were two or three rows behind the dugout and the scenes when all the supporters came on the pitch, they’re playing ‘Champions’ – brilliant scenes.

“Unfortunately we then told them to get off the pitch which then the supporters go home, so we need it next weekend, Stockport, we need it to be a bit more organised.

“These days don’t come around too often. We don’t want people disappearing off home within 10-15 minutes.

“I thought the scarves worked well, it was really, really good. We’ve got one more home game, lets make it special.

“To see the families of the players, the kids running around, it doesn’t happen often, it’s special, but we deserve it.”

O’s head to play-off chasing Mansfield in midweek and, after hosting Stockport, visit another side chasing promotion in Bradford City on the last day of the campaign.

And Wellens says he will make changes, but wants to win all three games.

“We will make changes because we’ve got a squad where we’ve had players travel up and down the country and not been included in the last six weeks,” he said.

“I want to reward them because this is a team ethic. That’s the reason we’ve won the league, because we’re a team, but we respect the other clubs around the top six/seven.

“We’ve got a chance to get 96 points. I don’t think this club has had over 90 points for a long, long time. I want to win every single game.”
