Wellens: Performance, work ethic, desire gives Leyton Orient confidence
Idris El Mizouni’s second-half goal proved enough for a 1-0 win over Crawley Town at Brisbane Road last weekend, as nearest rivals Stevenage lost 2-0 at Stockport County.
And Wellens wants his side to maintain their standards as they visit Blundell Park on Saturday.

“We can only concentrate on the next game,” he told the club website.
“The confidence comes from the performances we’re putting in. You look at that first 20 minutes [against Crawley]. They’ve spent a hell of a lot of money, but I think there was a big gap between the teams.
“They came into it a bit when we let balls bounce and were trying to be too intricate in terms of the last 15 minutes of the first half.
“But performances, people’s work ethic, people’s desire, that’s what gives you the confidence, not looking at the league table, because you know in football that things can change really quickly.
“I’m well aware of that, but I think with the group we’ve got and if we keep our standards at the same level, then we’ll be fine.”
A George Moncur penalty and Tom James wonder strike saw O’s beat Grimsby 2-0 on the first day of the season, but Wellens expects a tough test in the return meeting.
“We played them first game of the season and up until TJ’s wonder goal it was a very, very even contest,” he added.
“They was buoyed by the fact they’d just been promoted and were trying to carry on that momentum.
“Paul Hurst is a good experienced and it will be a tough game. The logistics of it make it difficult anyway because it’s a long way to go for us, but our away record on the whole has been exceptional so we’ll go there full of confidence.”
O’s were able to bring Paul Smyth back after four weeks out and Wellens will also be hoping a recent bug has cleared the camp.
“It’s been really frustrating because every time we think he’s going to be fit, he’s trained and broken down,” he said of Irishman Smyth.
“He’s a brilliant talent and when we’re bringing him off the bench we know any ball that lands to him he can be a threat.
“He nearly got one in behind when Craig [Clay] chipped one over their back four so we’re really pleased to have him and he’s a massive dimension for us.”
And Wellens also paid tribute to the late Justin Edinburgh, with the Crawley encounter serving as the club’s fourth annual JE3 Foundation fixture.
“I hope he’s looking down, real happy with the clean sheet, because he was a defender,” said Wellens.
“I think he’ll be pleased that what he started here, the football we’re playing at the moment is really exciting.
“We wish he was here and his family was here because I think there’s something special happening here.”
