Wellens: Leyton Orient want to make memories to last long time

O’s welcome Crawley Town to Brisbane Road on Saturday, boasting a 10-point lead at the top of the League Two table, although nearest rivals Stevenage have three games in hand.

And they go into the weekend’s action having taken 10 points from a possible 12 in February, beating bottom club Rochdale 2-1 in their most recent outing in midweek.

“The way I see it, these are memories we’re trying to create, as a group of players and a staff along with our supporters,” Wellens told the club website.

“It can be infectious, these young kids that are coming to watch us that have never seen a team be successful before, they’ve seen some good players at this club but they’ve not seen a sustained period of success since maybe ‘Lingy’ or Russell Slade was in charge.

“Obviously they had the year in the National League but at this level it doesn’t come often when you’ve got the opportunity to win a league.”

“So we’re just making memories together and hopefully we can make memories that last a long time because it’s the best thing you can do in football.”

George Moncur’s goal earned O’s a 1-0 win over Wimbledon in their last home match on a Saturday, when a crowd of 8,639 was in attendance.

And they have dropped just six points in 16 home league games so far this season, with Wellens adding: “It’s class, every Saturday home game has been really, really good and everybody can feel it.

“The supporters should be really pleased. I know we was holding on a little bit at the end [against Rochdale], but we have to also remember this is fourth division football.

“Some of the play that we played on Tuesday and some of the stuff we played at Walsall, it’s not fourth division football. We’ve got players that don’t belong in the fourth division of English football.

“It’s exciting and the fans should appreciate what they’ve got. It doesn’t happen every year that you get in a position like this, so keep turning up, keep supporting us and hopefully we’ll sell out every single home game.”

Former striker David Mooney is set to attend tomorrow’s match and will be introduced to the crowd on the pitch before kick-off, with fans urged to take their seats in plenty of time.
