Weird West Developer Gets Investment for its Ambitious New IP
Independent developer WolfEye Studios, known for the isometric immersive simulation roleplaying game Weird West, announced today a partnership with Galaxy Interactive for an ‘ambitious new IP’.
The venture capital fund is known for its investment in videogames, web3, crypto, and NFTs. Galaxy Interactive has invested in Build a Rocket Boy (Everywhere), Playable Worlds (a team led by Raph Koster of Star Wars Galaxies and Ultima Online fame, working on a sandbox MMORPG), 1047 Games (the developers of Splitgate), Genvid (dedicated to interactive streaming), and many more companies.
Weird West developer WolfEye aims to expand the team while prototyping for this bigger project begins. President and Creative Director Raphael Colantonio, who was the founder and president of Arkane for around 18 years, said in a statement:
I value working with investors who are as passionate and knowledgeable about games as Galaxy Interactive. Making games requires extraordinary effort and talent from all sides of the equation.
CEO and Executive Producer Julien Roby added:
Our partnership with Galaxy will allow us to maintain our independence while also allowing us to get more ambitious with our next game – which is a dream situation to be in!
For their part, Ryan You and Michael Fan, Partners at Galaxy Interactive, said:
Ryan You: We are extremely proud to partner with WolfEye who is built by pioneers of Immersive Sims, one of the most interesting game genres, and remains a leading actor in that space.
Michael Fan: The concepts of agency, interactivity, and more importantly: this idea of offering unique, unscripted, and unpredicted possibilities emerging from a system are what make video games so special and so interesting. And the team at WolfEye have dedicated their career exploring those topics.
Weird West launched in March 2022, earning an 8 out of 10 in Wccftech’s review penned by Francesco De Meo.
Even with its issues, Weird West is a highly engaging action role-playing game that fans of the genre will surely love, thanks to its gripping story, unique take on the Old West setting, and immersive simulation features. Some balancing and technical issues damage the experience a bit; still, if you wanted nothing more than to hunt zombies and werewolves with your revolver, kill vultures with your kicks, and generally experience a world you can actively shape, these issues will not matter all that much.
Weird West recently received a Definitive Edition for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. The game also supports various mods, and there’s even a first-person mode developed by a former technical director of the game.
