We took action over speeding drivers – people abuse us but we don’t care
TWO mums are so scared speeding drivers will hit their kids that they’ve taken matters into their own hands.
Penny Hughes and Rhian Mai even get abused for their attempts to slow motorists down, but they say it has to be done.
The Wales mums say they were sick of watching drivers “fly past” school children that they had to take action.
The pair arm themselves with a speed gun, clock drivers who are going well over the limit and then give the speeding motorists’ details to the police.
Penny said she knew something had to be done after she became terrified while watching people zoom past her home at dangerous speeds, even though there’s a 30mph speed limit.
She said: “There was a motorbike crash right outside my house in the summer holidays and it’s really frightening that somebody could knock our children down.

“There are children who play on the drive and in the front garden where the crash happened and crushed the wall, so it’s really worrying because cars just fly past.
“The road goes from a 60mph to 30 I just don’t get why people feel the need to overtake in a 30, it’s really dangerous.
“We can’t have speed bumps because it’s the A470 but we need something here to make it safer because it’s really worrying as it is.”
Penny said she felt like the area has been “forgotten”.
She added: “Something has to happen for the police to come out.
“After the motorbike crash they did come out about a week later but now they’ve stopped coming again.”
So, Penny and Rhian signed up to their local speed watching scheme to try catch drivers in the act.
In the first two hours the women clocked 17 drivers going over the speed limit and gave their details to the police.
But not everyone has welcomed their attempts to keep their community safe.
Penny said: “We’ve had people shout abuse at us from their cars as they go past.
“Some people just stare but we had one person shout ‘you’re a f***ing disgrace’ as they drove past.
“But at the end of the day it’s a problem for us who have kids and something needs to be done about it.
“We’re hoping that people will start to take notice and stop speeding because they know they’ll get caught.”
