Scroll through Instagram the last month or so and you’ll see countless videos proclaiming the apparent benefits of rosemary oil for hair growth.

Turns out, rosemary oil is a popular choice when it comes to essential oils for the scalp, thanks to its stimulating properties.

Like peppermint oil, it’s a powerful one when it comes to boosting circulation, making it a great option for boosting scalp health.

And companies have jumped on board this trend, with many a rosemary oil on the market (Balmond’s Scalp Oil, for instance, is a great option for those with a sensitive scalp and an itch you can’t scratch).

Rosemary oil is said to have anti-inflammatory properties, you see, and promote nerve growth. But, we have to ask, can this really translate to thicker, longer locks?

Rosemary oil on hair – how does it work?

‘Serums that are derived from rosemary oil, argan oil and coconut oil – as well as biotin, caffeine, vitamin C, vitamin B5 and various other vitamins and minerals – all promote and support healthy hair and hair growth – and will work in preventing further hair loss, depending on the individual’s own health and wellbeing,’ explains Dr Matee Rajput, one of the UKs leading hair transplant surgeons.

Dr Rajput adds: Rosemary oil, in particular, encourages hair growth because of its anti-inflammatory properties, promoting new growth and improving circulation to the hair follicles.’

But that’s not the only way rosemary oil can benefit the scalp.

‘Beyond stimulating hair growth, rosemary oil is also used to prevent premature greying and dandruff – and it may also help with a dry or itchy scalp,’ Dr Rajput says.

Kevin Moore, Trichologist at Regrowz.com agrees on the general benefits of using a hair oil, explaining: ‘A hair serum can increase hair growth. It helps promote hair growth by encouraging the follicles to grow.

‘A healthy and well-conditioned scalp will promote healthy hair as well as increase growth.  It will encourage shinier and healthier hair with regular use. It would also promote healthier scalp circulation and reduce hair loss.’

Why is there such a buzz around rosemary oil right now?

‘Its prominence has grown massively in the past year, mainly due to social media and users showcasing their hair growth from using the oil.

‘We’re seeing lots of promotion on social media recently, specifically on TikTok, for Rosemary oil, which is now being suggested as being as affective as using Minoxidil – which is a synthetic drug used to promote hair growth.’

Can rosemary oil prevent hair loss?

While the causes and treatment of hair loss can vary hugely from case to case, there is some evidence to suggest that rosemary oil could help tackle hair loss.

‘In addition to helping the scalp stay healthy, rosemary oil could therefore prevent hair follicles from being starved of blood supply and dying off, which is one of the causes of hair loss,’ Dr Rajput explained.

Why is scalp care so important for hair growth?

‘The scalp contains hundreds of thousands of tiny follicles,’ explains Leading Hair Transplant Surgeon, Dr Furqan Raja, of Harley Street’s The Private Clinic.

‘Your hair grows out of these follicles and so a healthy scalp is vital for healthy hair growth. Maintaining a balanced environment with healthy skin will maintain healthy hair growth and reduce hair shedding.’

‘Hair oiling is something that has been done for hundreds or even thousands of years in some cultures and can be beneficial for helping to hydrate hair follicles and prevent dryness of the scalp, as well as stimulating growth,’ explains Dr Raja.

How should we apply rosemary oil?

To get the best results, our expert suggests applying rosemary oil two-to-three times weekly.

‘Head and scalp massages are also beneficial and best performed alongside applying an oil or serum,’ Dr Rajput explains. ‘Massaging the scalp can increase blood flow which helps get nutrients and blood supply to the hair follicle

‘To carry this out at home, apply the serum and then massage it into the scalp, pressing with your fingertips using slight pressure.’

‘You can also get head massaging products, such as soft-ended silicone combs,’ Dr Rajput tells us. ‘Some of your thinning hair may fall out during scalp massages – but don’t worry about that too much.’

And what other ways can we boost our scalp health?

One golden rule is to keep hair washing to a minimum, as Dr Rajput explains: ‘Don’t overwash your hair, three-four times per week is the optimum amount. And make sure your shampoo doesn’t contain parabens or ammonia.’
