We asked, you told us: You prefer incognito mode over a second browser

Google Chrome Incognito Mode multiple tabs

Your browsing history can often be a deeply personal affair, and there are times when you don’t want certain websites or searches to be associated with your account.

Incognito mode or a second browser works well in these cases, but which one is the more popular solution? We asked this question last week and here’s how you answered it.

Do you use incognito mode or a second browser?

Results

A total of 1,268 votes were counted in this poll as of writing, and it turns out that almost half (47%) of you said you use incognito mode. This was easily the most popular choice of the lot.

Meanwhile, just over 27% of polled readers said they used both incognito mode and a second browser. This was reflected in the comments too, with several readers noting that they prefer a combo.

Finally, almost 26% of respondents said they simply used a second browser. This could be handy if you want to retain browsing data but don’t want it tied to your primary browser.

Comments

  • Andrew Rossetti: I use incognito on a second browser
  • Joe Black: I use Brave, I do not really have a need for incognito or second browser .. on a phone.
  • mattc: Both and use a VPN
  • farawayplace: I usually surf with Google Chrome, but use a Private Window on Firefox, because the two browsers are not “friends.” I do, however, exclusively use Brave browser for one thing — Youtube Videos — due to it’s ability to filter all ads. In fact, Brave has all but become a Youtube button, for me. I don’t use Brave in Incognito for hushed surfing, as it’s still too associated to Google, for my liking. I feel much safer using Firefox with a private tab.
  • Farhan Ahmad Tajuddin: I mainly use Incognito since I don’t like to flood up my phone/laptop with browsing history, but there are times I use second browser for certain features.
  • Techngro: I rarely use what Brave calls a “private window” on my phone or tablet. But I do tend to use it quite often on my desktop. When there are Youtube videos that I don’t want to affect my recommendations (those garbage “Star Wars High Republic” videos, for example), I’ll open them up in a private window. Downside is I can’t join the rest of Star Wars fans in downvoting that nonsense into oblivion.
