Water service restored after being shut off again for entire village of Dixmoor

DIXMOOOR, Ill. (CBS) – Water service was back in operation in Dixmoor Thursday evening, after being shut off to the entire village earlier because of two water main breaks.

One of the water main breaks was at 141st and Wood streets, the other at 143rd Street and Davis Avenue. The village said it had to turn off the water because of how much water was lost from the village’s tank, and also due to concerns about burning up the village water pumps.

Dixmoor Village President Fitzgerald Roberts said late Thursday that the water mains had been repaired and service had returned.

“Water service is back up and running in Dixmoor, but at the moment pressure is low while we wait for the water tank to refill,” Roberts said in a news release. “There is a boil water order in effect until further notice. We will continue to make water available for residents at Village Halls for residents who need it.”

Earlier in the evening, village officials were handing out bottled water to residents at the Dixmoor Village Hall.

Some residents complained, particularly given that Dixmoor has lost water service more than once before this in recent times.

“This is like the third time we’ve been shut off for water this year,” said Dixmoor resident Arthur Jones. “So we’re looking like, what’s going on? Why is everything going so bad?”

The water shutoff Thursday came after the village instated a boil order due to low water pressure making the water unsafe to drink. Only residents in the Modern Estates mobile home park had been impacted by the order.

Dixmoor has endured issues with its water system on and off for years — most recently in March.

Earlier this year, the village was given a $2 million dollar check to fix the issue.
