Watch: Young Blue Jays fan ecstatic as outfielder Kevin Kiermaier gifts him batting gloves
Blue Jays centre-fielder Kevin Kiermaier, rapidly becoming a fan favourite in Toronto after being cast as a villain while with the rival Tampa Bay Rays, made one young fan’s night Tuesday.
At the bottom of the fourth inning against the Chicago White Sox, Kiermaier was back in the dugout after tripling and then scoring.
He saw a young fan in the stands, walked over and tossed his gloves to the kid, pointing and waving at him.
With the prized gloves in his hands, the kid couldn’t believe his luck. His mouth dropped open, his eyes popped and he kissed both gloves as Kiermaier gave him a thumbs up.
Kiermaier later told Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae that it’s his habit to give his batting gloves to kids whenever he slides and tears them.
“I may have made his night (after seeing his reaction) but he really made my night,” Kiermaier said.
The Jays went on to beat the White Sox 7-0 and will conclude the series with a Wednesday matinee.
Kiermaier was the target of boo-birds at Rogers Centre while still with the Rays after he picked up Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk’s data card following a close play at the plate.
He won over fans right away this season, robbing the Tigers of a homer while climbing the centre-field fence in his first game in Toronto. He’s batting just under .300 as the No. 9 batter in the lineup.
