Joey de Leon spoke about how he considers bashers as individuals driven by “envy”—a sentiment that has elicited varying reactions from netizens.

The “Eat Bulaga” host showed a video of himself giving his take on bashers through his Instagram page on Thursday, Jan. 19.

“Anong meron ang isang basher bukod sa giting o tapang para manira o mamuna ng ibang tao? Ang sagot, halu-haluin niyo ang mga letra ng salitang giting at makukuha niyo ang salitang inggit,” he explained.

(What do bashers have aside from their tenacity or guts to discredit or criticize other people? The answer comes out when you shuffle the letters of the word “giting”—”inggit.”)

Fellow celebrities Jessa Zaragoza, Carmi Martin and Arnold Clavio were among those, along with a number of netizens, who nodded in agreement with De Leon, via the comments section.

Meanwhile, one @ms.jaye contradicted the TV host and pointed out that at certain instances, people are being called out not out of envy but because of “wrong behavior.”

“Kung iba-bash kita ng walang basehan at [nakakaangat] ka sa akin, siguro inggit ‘yun. Pero if you are being called out for wrong behavior, then mag isip-isip ka,” the Instagram user said. “Instead of defending yourself and make excuses, have an [introspection]. Baka nga may point sila na nang ba-bash sayo.”

(If I would bash without any basis and you are a person better than I, then that’s envy. But if you are being called out for wrong behavior, then you should contemplate. Instead of defending yourself and [making] excuses, have an introspection. Maybe those who are bashing you have a point.)

De Leon then responded to the said netizen and clarified that he was pertaining to those who use foul language when expressing criticisms.

De Leon himself had been a subject of criticism in several instances including when he was called out for his “disgusting” comments to an “Eat Bulaga” contestant in 2018; and when he made “double meaning jokes” to a flight attendant contestant in 2020.  /ra
