Watch Athletic Bilbao KO Real with last-gasp Copa del Rey winner to reach last 4

ALEX BERENGUER curved a glorious last-gasp winner as Athletic Bilbao dumped Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey and punished Carlo Ancelotti’s controversial substitutions.

Real boss Ancelotti left out Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Luka Jovic – then took off Vinicius and Toni Kroos.

And Athletic responded by upping their superiority to deservedly reach the semi-finals, having KO’d Barcelona in the previous round.

Sub Berenguer darted in from the right to arrow a low left-footer into the far corner on 89 minutes.

Real Zaragoza are the only other team to have dispatched Spain’s two traditional giants Real and Barca from the main domestic cup competition in one season.

Valencia, Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano join Athletic in the last four.

But in LaLiga Real remain four points clear of second-placed Sevilla.

Athletic outbattled Real from the start, with Dani Garcia outstanding.

The Spanish midfielder fired in three shots within the first 15 minutes.

Ancelotti’s anxiety then turned to annoyance when Raul Garcia escaped punishment for a string of touch challenges.

Without injured Karim Benzema, Real waited 27 minutes for their first opening, Julen Agirrezabala foiling Rodrygo.

And Kroos gifted Athletic a clear opportunity, Muniain picking up the German’s loose pass to set up Inaki Williams for a shot blocked by Lucas Vazquez.

Dani Garcia’s fourth foul – Vinicius the main victim of Athletic’s stern challenges – finally earned him a booking.

But speedster Nico Williams, a major menace to Real’s defence, limped off crying before the break – Berenguer coming on for the second half.

Athletic, though, stayed on top, Thibaut Courtois pawing away a Martinez header form a Muniain free-kick.

Ancelotti brought on Isco for Vinicius – understandably hauled off as he’d just returned from two games with Brazil.

But Kroos soon following the striker off was more puzzling, French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga coming on.

Athletic’s only real flaw was poor finishing.

But when Casemiro surrendered possession Mikel Vesga supplied Berenguer, who twisted away from Nacho and rasped the only goal past Courtois’s full-stretch dive.
