Watch as van driver knocks cyclist over on pavement – viewers are divided
A SHOCKING VIDEO shows the moment a “careless” van driver knocks a cyclist over on the pavement, but drivers are divided on who’s to blame.
The clip, which appears to be recorded from a house, begins with the van parked in front of a driveway.
A camera captured the moment a driver opened his van door – and hit a man cycling on the pavement.
It appears that the cyclist was “doored” because the van driver failed to check his mirror before opening the door.
The cyclist fell off the bicycle and hit the floor, but the van driver quickly went to assist him.
The video title is: ‘Which one is to blame’, while the caption reads: ‘Who was in the wrong?’
The Highway Code says: “You MUST ensure you do not hit anyone when you open your door. Check for cyclists or other traffic by looking all around and using your mirrors.
“Where you are able to do so, you should open the door using your hand on the opposite side to the door you are opening; for example, use your left hand to open a door on your right-hand side.
“This will make you turn your head to look over your shoulder.
“You are more likely to avoid causing injury to cyclists or motorcyclists passing you on the road or to people on the pavement.”
The video has gone viral on social media with more than 63,100 views and 566 comments.
People in the comments are divided, with some of them thinking that both are in the wrong.
One said: “Both… van driver should have checked. The bike shouldn’t have been on the pavement.”
Another pointed out: “Cycle as he should not be on the footpath.”
A third pointed out: “Van, 100%. Nice insurance claim for the cyclist. Imagine if it was a wheelchair user, or someone jogging. Opened the door without looking.”
This comes after a car expert claimed that drivers have been opening their car doors incorrectly – potentially putting their life at risk.
Plus, an amazing car cleaning hack that will save you time, and money and make your journeys easier has been revealed.
