Watch as driver smashes into waiting car while overtaking traffic
A video has revealed the moment an SUV smashes into a parked car, almost ripping the driver’s door clean off – but people are divided on who’s actually to blame.
The footage shows a Toyota RAV4 attempting to overtake a grey VW Polo on a busy, suburban street before disaster strikes.
TikToker jobbertok posted the clip on his channel which has various videos highlighting road traffic issues and examples of poor driving.
The clip opens by showing a typically busy UK street with cars and vans parked up on the left lane and oncoming traffic flowing from the right.
A parked car’s dash cam is recording the scene from behind the stationary VW Polo – which is noticeable as it’s parked quite a distance from the pavement and slightly blocking the road ahead.
A few seconds in and the Toyota comes into view, moving on to overtake the Polo.
But just as it’s passing, the driver of the small VW opens the door right into the path of the SUV.
With no time to react or avoid a collision, the Toyota smashes into the door with glass flying everywhere and the door hanging off its hinges.
Poster jobbertok then provides a commentary on why he thinks the driver of the Polo was to blame for the crash.
He also mentions why it’s important to use the Dutch Reach method for opening a car door from the inside.
This means that a driver in a right-hand drive car would open the door with their left hand – encouraging them to look behind and check any blind spots.
However, people commenting on the video remained divided on who was really to blame for the crash.
One said: “Isn’t it common sense to check your blind spot before opening the door
Another commented: “I don’t think it was a correctly proceeding vehicle. There was oncoming traffic and the vehicle should have waited behind the obstruction.
While a third chimed in: “Happened to me. I should’ve looked in my driver mirror first before opening the door. I won’t make mistake again.
