Watch as 44-tonne HGV has to swerve onto hard shoulder to avoid a dozy driver

A SHOCKING video caught the moment a quick-thinking HGV driver managed to avoid a horrific smash on the motorway.

The incident happened on the southbound M6 near Lancaster last month and involved an Audi SUV.

The video was taken using a dash cam in the HGV and starts with the truck’s driver Martin Shaw making his way along the inside lane.

Before long a black Audi Q5 comes into view on the hard shoulder but it begins to move as the HGV draws closer.

Rather than wait for the HGV to pass, the Audi pulls out into the inside lane at the last moment.

With nowhere to go, it forces the HGV driver to swerve left into the hard shoulder violently to avoid a massive collision.

Mr. Shaw uploaded to the video to social media and said: “If you set off on a hard shoulder to rejoin the motorway build your speed up on the shoulder, not on the f***ing motorway in front of a 44ton HGV.

“I don’t know how they couldn’t see me, the truck I was driving was 14ft high and 7ft wide – jumping straight onto the motorway from a standing start is just suicidal.”

After avoiding the Audi, the HGV driver continued on the hard shoulder at high speed until the Q5 overtook and sped off.

Edmund King, AA president, said: “This was a death wish manoeuvre from the driver on the hard shoulder.

“Drivers should be patient, build up speed and only re-join the carriageway when safe to do so.

“HGVs have much longer stopping distances and it was lucky that this HGV driver was fully alert.”
