Men have been warned against buying one brand of illegal sexual supplements that could cause serious damage.
Australia’s drug regulator has warned people against taking certain erectile dysfunction pills that are illegal here.
The Panther Power Platinum 11000 and S.W.A.G II Platinum 33K products pose a “serious risk” to health and should not be taken, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) said on Thursday.
The TGA tested the capsules and found an undeclared substance, sildenafil, contained inside them.
Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction, a relatively common condition that can affect men of all ages.
However, it can interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels, the TGA warned.
Nitrates are often prescribed to people with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease.
It follows similar warnings the regulator made on Wednesday for 777K products and One Night Love tablets, which are also used to treat erectile dysfunction and illegal in Australia.
The TGA advised people to stop using the capsules and take any remaining products to their local pharmacy for safe disposal.
“If you have used any of these products and have concerns, consult your health care practitioner,” the regulator said.
“If you suspect a side effect (adverse event) to any product, please make an online report to the TGA or telephone 1800 020 653.”
The TGA advised that sildenafil was prescription-only, meaning it poses a higher level of risk to those who take it.
In Australia, advertising and supply of Panther Power Platinum 11000, S.W.A.G II Platinum 33K, One Night Love tablets and 777K is illegal, as the products have not been entered into the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).
Products sold online that are not entered in the ARTG and often do not request a doctor’s prescription may be counterfeit, contain undeclared ingredients and may cause unexpected or severe adverse reactions, the TGA said.
Lack of manufacturing and testing standards can also result in contaminated products.
The TGA said it was working with Australian Border Force to stop the products entering the country.
“The ABF will seize and destroy the product as it is intercepted at the Australian border,” it warned.
Consumers wanting to treat erectile dysfunction are advised to consult their doctor.
