Warner’s career in doubt after injury update

Australian veteran David Warner is returning home after being ruled out of the remainder of the India tour.

The 36-year-old opening batter was hit twice during his innings in Delhi, being concussed and also fracturing his elbow.

Cricket Australia has opted to send him home to Sydney to recover, and he will miss the remaining two matches.

He follows Josh Hazlewood home, who flew out of India after failing to recover from an Achilles injury.

”After further assessment, (Warner) will require a period of rehabilitation which will preclude any further involvement in the remainder of the Test series,” Cricket Australia said.

“It is currently anticipated that he will return to India for the three one-day internationals.”

The injury to Warner could have major ramifications for his future in the Test team.

His selection for the India and England tours this year was already being questioned given his dismal career record overseas.

The Aussie selectors stuck solid with the veteran nonetheless, but he returned scores of only one and 10 in Nagpur, then was out for 15 in Delhi before being subbed out with concussion.

The next Test assignment is the Ashes in England in June and July.

Warner’s average in England is an unenviable 26.04, and when he last toured there in 2019 he averaged a miserable 9.00 and was dominated by England’s fast bowlers – Stuart Broad in particular.

Warner had not reached triple figures for Australia in almost three years until he whacked a double ton in Melbourne against South Africa.
