Wallabies legend returns home to Brumbies

It is back to the future for Stephen Larkham and the Brumbies after the Wallabies legend was appointed coach for the 2023 and 2024 Super Rugby Pacific seasons.

After a glittering playing career Larkham embarked on a coaching career with the Brumbies before moving onto roles with the Wallabies and then Munster.

Larkham announced his departure from the Irish club yesterday and the Canberra homecoming was confirmed by the Brumbies this morning.

Larkham will see out the season in Ireland before returning to the Brumbies in July.

Current coach Dan McKellar will leave at the end of the 2022 season to take a fulltime job as forwards coach with the Wallabies.

“Through the recruitment process, Stephen proved to be the strongest candidate, and his appointment gives us an opportunity to continue the progress we have made on the field, and what we can add to that in 2022,” Brumbies chief executive Phil Thomson said.

“Making this appointment now puts us in a position where we have certainty for the players, and it is also important that we have continuity and stability for our existing staff and the organisation moving forward.”

Larkham said he had added extra strings to his bow while at European powerhouse Munster.

“I’ve developed and learnt a lot both as a person and as a coach in these past couple of years, and I’m looking forward to bringing that experience back to the Brumbies to ensure their continued success,” Larkham said.

“Moving forward for this season, I’ll be supporting the Brumbies as always from here in Ireland but my only focus now is on finishing off my time with Munster on a high.”
