Wallabies freak brings down world champions

The Wallabies have continued their incredible home record over the Springboks, winning 25-17 at the Adelaide Oval.

It continues a dominant decade for Australia, who haven’t lost to South Africa on home soil since 2013.

Wallabies winger Marika Koroibete and flanker Fraser McReight were the stars of the show with Koroibete earning man of the match honours.

McReight opened the scoring and ended the game with two tries while Koroibete pulled off a show-stopping try-saver on Makazole Mapimpi.

“The tackle had to be made,” said Koroibete.

“We had one man down, we had to cover the short side and the other side as well.

“I just put my body on the line for the boys there. I was lucky enough to make a try-saving tackle today.”

Wallabies winger sees yellow after string of penalties

Wallabies captain James Slipper hailed Koroibete for his try-saver.

“Oh, it’s huge,” said Slipper.

“Test match rugby, it’s built on big moments. And normally the team that wins goes well in those big moments and we had quite a few in the back end of the first half.

“This group, I’ve said it a lot of times, it’s got a lot of character. It’s just about consistently performing and that’s probably our biggest challenge now is to back that effort up next week in Sydney.”

Slipper said he was stoked to rebound after their humbling loss to Argentina.

“Mate, we’re very proud of the effort we showed today,” said Slipper.

“It was a tough tour in Argentina. Pretty disappointing the way we finished over there. But to come here in front of an Adelaide crowd, Adelaide stadium, very proud of the effort we put in.”

Wallabies burst through for first-minute try

Noah Lolesio added, “I reckon he’s the best winger in the world right now.

“So it’s a pleasure to play inside or outside him. And I guess as you saw today, he’s a freak. I’m just happy that I’m one of his teammates, not opposing him.”

It was one-way traffic from the outset as flanker McReight crossed the line to make it 7-0 just a minute into the game.

The Wallabies were far from perfect in the first half, conceding penalty after penalty in the opening stanza.

However, the Springboks didn’t make them pay as Handre Pollard missed several shots on goal that would have put them within one point a quarter of the way in.

The Wallabies would cop a yellow card for their repeated misdemeanours, resulting in Tom Wright spending 10 minutes in the sin bin.

Not long before the first half concluded, Mapimpi threatened to cross the chalk only for Koroibete to come flying across and execute an extraordinary try saver.

Springboks star sent off for ‘fly swat’ hit on Wallaby

With less than a minute to go in the first half, a bizarre incident saw Faf de Klerk sent off after swiping Nic White’s face off the back of a scrum.

White collapsed to the ground while the Boks No.9 could only laugh as he wandered from the field in bemusement.

It wasn’t long after that Koroibete starred again as he burst through the defence to make it 15-0.

A sensational sequence of play in the 57th minute saw McReight cross the line for a second time.

That came courtesy of Noah Lolesio, who burst through a gap in the opposition line off the back of a Slipper pass, passing out the back of the hand to McReight.

That made it 22-3 which soon became 25-3 thanks to a Lolesio penalty.

The Springboks took the bonus point advantage away in the 76th minute after a messy sequence finally saw Kwagga Smith score a consolation try to make it 25-10.

Smith scored another just minutes later, but it was too little too late for the Springboks who wound up seven points short.

Australia and South Africa will go head to head again at Allianz Stadium on September 3.
