Wallabies confirm star’s devastating injury

The Wallabies have been dealt a massive blow with Samu Kerevi to miss the remainder of the year due to a knee injury suffered at the Commonwealth Games.

Kerevi hurt his right knee while playing for Australia’s rugby sevens team against Kenya in a pool clash this week.

While the team initially downplayed the severity of the injury, it has been confirmed as an ACL, meaning Kerevi will miss the Wallabies’ Rugby Championship campaign and end of year tour to the northern hemisphere.

Kerevi suffered the injury in a seemingly innocuous incident when he carried the ball and broke a tackle before leaving the field soon after in Australia’s 7-5 win.

“I’m always confident but I’ll get a doc on it and see. It was just a big bang but then once it settled down it was fine,” the 28-year-old initially said after the blow.

But the Suntory centre is expected to miss the remainder of the season, with the Wallabies confirming the 41 Test centre is expected to spend at least six months on the sidelines.

It’s understood Kerevi is beside himself when contemplating what this means for his Wallabies teammates.

The Wallabies were happy for Kerevi to take part of Australia’s sevens campaign after the former Queensland Reds captain made a promise to his teammates from the Tokyo Olympics that he would try and help them win gold in Birmingham.

“Obviously Samu going away to the sevens, to the Commonwealth Games, we thought that was really important,” Wallabies coach Dave Rennie said before the Birmingham games.

“The initial talks we had a few months ago was if we got injuries maybe we wouldn’t let him go, but it’s important for our country to send away a strong side that’s got a chance of winning a medal – and the sevens boys have been going well of late and Samu will only add to that, so we’re committed to that.

“With Izzy Perese out injured, he’s (Irae Simone) coming in just to fill a role in the Argentinian tour and we’ll get Samu back after that.”
