The 6,600-square-feet facility has an extended reality (XR) arena that will help teams to visualize the complete vehicle virtually while enabling the India-based workforce to collaborate engineers across Volvo Group globally. The facility is also equipped with an engine cooling test rig and brake board while also having bays for 3D printing and electric vehicle charging. The company has collaborated with Meta and hardware company Nvidia for the back-end technologies. The facility will also be used for prototype demonstration and testing and crash test simulations. India has the largest research and development facilities outside of Sweden for the company.
“The launch of the Vehicle TechLab in Bangalore, reflects the key role Volvo Group’s research and development in India plays in achieving the organization’s ambitious science-based targets initiatives (SBTi) targets,” said CR Vishwanath, vice president, Volvo Group Trucks Technology, India. “The TechLab adds to the infrastructure we already have in place to support our engineers to enhance their knowledge and contribute in developing sustainable products using advanced technology,” he said.
The facility will also be used for collaborating with its startup incubator and accelerator programme CampX. The initiative, launched globally last July, it has already collaborated with over 70 startups in India.
Its other R&D centres are in Australia, France and Brazil. The automaker’s overarching theme in India R&D operations and expansion is embedded software.
