Vince McMahon retires as WWE boss after 40 years in charge of wrestling brand
VINCE MCMAHON has announced his shock retirement from WWE.
The WWE chairman has called time on his career at the age of 77.
He posted a short and tweet statement on Twitter on Friday night announcing his move.
It marked the end of an era for the wrestling world after he bought the company in 1982 from his father.
His tweet read: “At 77, time for me to retire. Thank you, WWE Universe. Then. Now. Forever. Together.”
McMahon released another longer statement through the company.
It read: “As I approach 77 years old, I feel it’s time for me to retire as Chairman and CEO of WWE.
“Throughout the years, it’s been a privilege to help WWE bring you joy, inspire you, thrill you, surprise you, and always entertain you.
“I would like to thank my family for mightily contributing to our success, and I would also like to thank all of our past and present Superstars and employees for their dedication and passion for our brand.
“Most importantly, I would like to thank our fans for allowing us into your homes every week and being your choice of entertainment.
“I hold the deepest appreciation and admiration for our generations of fans all over the world who have liked, currently like, and sometimes even love our form of Sports Entertainment.”
The WWE boss recently stepped back from his role as CEO amid an investigation.
There were claims he paid an ex-employee $3million to stay quiet about an affair.
But he announced that he would still continue his on-screen character as Mr McMahon.
The McMahon probe began in April 2022, finding non-disclosure agreements involving claims made by ex female WWE employees of misconduct by McMahon and John Laurinaitis, the head of talent relations.
The WWE put out a statement on confirming McMahon has “voluntarily stepped back from his responsibilities” with the company.
His daughter and the wife of wrestling legend Triple H, Stephanie, took over as interim CEO and chairwoman.
McMahon bought Capitol Wrestling Corporation, the holding company that owned the then-World Wrestling Federation from his father, Vincent J McMahon, in 1982.
McMahon expanded the company during the pro-wrestling boom in the 1980s and over the years, WWE has cited McMahon as the key to the company’s success.
But he’s now announced a sudden retirement in the end of an era for sports entertainment.
