Victor Lindelof speaks out on Manchester United interest in Lisandro Martinez
Victor Lindelof is relishing the prospect of added competition in Lisandro Martinez should Manchester United seal a move for the Ajax defender.
United have already made one addition to their backline with Tyrell Malacia joining from Feyenoord with Erik ten Hag also eager to be bring in reinforcements at centre-half.
United have had two bids rejected by Ajax for the Argentina international, with Ajax said to be holding out for around £51m for the defender.
Martinez is also wanted by Arsenal but reports suggest he favours a move to Old Trafford and is now reportedly ready to force through his move this week.
Having starred under ten Hag last season, Martinez would be expected to immediately come in and challenge for a first-team role.
Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane was the preferred partnership at the back last season while Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are still at the club.
While competition for places will be intense, Lindelof has vowed to fight for his place.
‘I’m not a nervous person, I’m quite calm. I know what I can do on the pitch, I’ve been working very hard and that’s all I can focus on really,’ Lindelof said when asked if talk of Martinez’s arrival has left him unnerved.
‘I’m always confident. At every club like this there should be competition for places, that’s a very good thing.
‘You need it to perform and to compete for trophies. This is my sixth year, I’ve made almost 200 appearances now, I want to do many more and I want to help the team on the pitch.
‘I’ve been playing quite a lot of games. Even if I have a bad day, I think I can perform at a high level and I think my teammates can trust me as well on the pitch.’
