On Tuesday evening, Channel 4 aired a documentary called Vicky Pattison: Alcohol, Dad and Me, which saw the former Geordie Shore star explore her own relationship with drinking as well as her dad’s.
The 34-year-old confessed in the film how uncomfortable she felt watching clips of herself inebriated in the reality show when she was in her early twenties, before exploring whether there could be a link between how she consumes alcohol and her experience of growing up with an alcoholic parent.
Near the end of the programme, Vicky took her father for a joint counselling session with a psychologist in London, having found it difficult to tell him exactly how she felt after he relapsed with alcohol over the Christmas months.
The reality star was the first to speak, revealing her fears that she’d ‘enabled’ her dad in the past because she didn’t want to ‘make him feel worse’ about his drinking.
Wiping away her tears, she said: ‘I think I really want to be a mum, I really want to have kids, I want my kids to meet you,’ as she stressed how ‘worried’ she was that if her dad doesn’t stop drinking, ‘that you won’t meet them’.
Vicky told her dad that seeing him ‘slip back’ into ‘old habits’ over the winter period made her feel extremely worried, because ‘drinking to that volume, your body can’t take it anymore’.
Having lied in the past about his drinking habits, her dad candidly acknowledged that there are days when he knows ‘I won’t be able to walk past the booze shop’.
Vicky – who announced her engagement to her boyfriend Ercan Ramadan earlier this year – then gave her dad an ultimatum, telling him that if he didn’t strive to quit drinking, he wouldn’t be able to be in her life at all.
‘Going forward, I want you in my life so much, and I want to have a good relationship with you, but if that’s going to be possible, I need you to commit to really stopping drinking, otherwise I can’t have you in my life,’ she said.
While he said that he couldn’t ‘give her the promise that she’s looking for’, he then said that he was ‘willing to try anything’, with the psychologist recommending that he look into anxiety management to try and find other ways of coping, rather than using alcohol to suppress his emotions.
The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! winner shared that she was ‘disappointed’ that her dad couldn’t agree to quit alcohol completely – but promised to be with him ‘every step of the way’ if he promises to look into different forms of tackling his anxiety.
Several people expressed their deep admiration for Vicky for creating the documentary, with one viewer writing on Twitter: ‘It was a powerful piece of television. Something you should be very proud of.’
