Venom Sets Eddie Brock Up for a Massive Betrayal

Venom and Eddie are betrayed by a special symbiote that he can’t control, with the foe posing as a friend who actually wants Venom’s throne.

WARNING: the following contains spoilers for Venom #1 by Al Ewing, Ram V, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, Alex Sinclair, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

Venom has a much different status quo than ever before, with the once street-level Lethal Protector taking to the stars and beyond. As the King in Black, he’s connected to basically every other symbiote in the universe, giving him god-like power. Unfortunately, that’s not going to be enough to deal with his latest and deadliest villain.

Venom and Eddie are betrayed by a special symbiote that he can’t control, with the foe posing as a friend who actually wants Venom’s throne. What happens next is a trip through time and out of existence, with Eddie Brock’s fate taking him out of the picture for the time being. Here’s how a member of Venom’s symbiote army might just take out the group’s leader once and for all.

The Betrayal of Eddie Brock

The issue begins with Eddie Brock as the King in Black traversing the cosmos as part of his new Venom symbiote horde. Their goal is to investigate situations throughout the galaxy and bring about their own brand of justice, truly making Venom one of the good guys once and for all. This is especially necessary after Knull, the former King in Black ravaged life throughout the cosmos and made symbiotes more feared than ever. Hoping to change their reputation, Eddie sends his “team” to check out a spaceship that seemingly attacked.

Eddie is alerted by one of his symbiotes that he had named George. Jumping into his body via symbiote-hopping, Eddie is greeted with a murderous mirror image. A symbiote he had begun called Ringo was previously sent to check in on the spaceship, with Venom discovering that he had subsequently killed the entire crew. Venom is unable to jump into “Ringo’s” body, fearing that he has some sort of connection to Knull or even Carnage. The new symbiote threat remarks that the King in Black shouldn’t get comfortable on his throne and that he’ll soon have to give it up.

Meridius, The New King In Black?

Eddie’s life, or at least what’s left of it, only gets worse after this. He and his son Dylan are attacked by a mysterious opponent, with this enemy at one point attempting to take Eddie’s visage and manipulate his son. Under fire and without any other choice, Dylan bonds with the Venom symbiote to fight off his attackers. Eddie sees all of this taking place, and with no other choice himself, he tries to tap into his newfound ability to hop into any symbiote from any place or time.

This only has a further disastrous effect, seemingly killing Eddie and removing him from existence, at least on the normal plane of existence. This is confirmed by Meridius, a figure who greets Eddie and Venom in the new reality that they reconstitute into. Meridius declares himself a friend, but that’s definitely not the case given what happens in the next few panels.

Elsewhere, Meridius and his people look at the remains of the dead Eddie Brock. Described as an absent throne, this would seem to be the throne of the King in Black, now unattended due to Eddie’s “death.” Meridius himself would seem to be able to travel throughout the timestream, so he was likely the one to engineer Eddie’s removal from the present time and space in order to take his throne. Thus, he’s likely also the same symbiote who once worked for Eddie and betrayed him at the beginning of the issue. Meridius’ appearance somewhat resembles a symbiote, albeit with a different head design resembling a crown. Why he wants to be the new King in Black and what has become of Eddie Brock remains to be seen, but he’s most definitely going to be one of the toughest villains that Venom has faced yet.
