Venom: How Ultimate Marvel Made the Symbiote Even More Dangerous
The Ultimate Universe had a completely different origin for Spider-Man frenemy Venom, and it made the more earthbound symbiote a lot more dangerous.
The Venom symbiote is most known for being bonded with Eddie Brock, with the duo’s portrayal in late ’80s/early ’90s Spider-Man comics cementing their depictions elsewhere. There was one universe, however, where the Venom symbiote and Eddie Brock diverged quite a bit from their more mainstream counterparts. The Ultimate Universe had a completely different origin for Venom, and it made the more earthbound symbiote a lot more dangerous.
Venom in the Ultimate Universe lacked both an extraterrestrial origin and a conscience. Even the bloodthirsty depiction of the symbiote other times pales in comparison to how relatively mindless it was in Ultimate Spider-Man. Here’s how the Ultimate Venom engaged in a litany of maximum carnage of his own.
Ultimate Venom’s Origin
Ultimate Venom was not an alien symbiote, but rather an earthbound scientific creation of Richard Parker and Eddie Brock, Sr. This symbiote was a sort of biological suit that would heal its host and make them physically stronger and more robust. These regenerative properties were made for those with terminal illnesses. Unfortunately, the symbiote’s second phase was particularly troublesome and resulting in the deaths of Brock and his wife, as well as Richard and Mary Parker.
After Spider-Man had been exposed to part of it, Eddie Brock, Jr. willingly bonded with another sample, turning him into the monstrous Venom. The suit’s grotesque form was explained as the suit being primed for Richard Parker’s DNA as it was still being developed. Being a different symbiote sample is also why Venom, like his current live-action movie counterpart, lacks the iconic giant white spider symbol on his chest.
Upon becoming Venom, the fusion of the symbiote and Eddie immediately ate someone nearby. This is due to the overwhelming drive to consume that the symbiote has. While still essentially another personality like the 616 Universe Venom symbiote, this version of the symbiote is still essentially mindless and only driven to feed. This is because Project Venom was as much of a parasite as it was a symbiote, feeding off of a host as much as it replenished their strength. In other words, it eats hosts from the inside out, draining them of nutrients unless supplied with such from somewhere else. To sustain this, Venom was required to intake massive amounts of organic material, namely that of living tissue.
The Hunger of Ultimate Venom
This lack of control made Venom an absolute monster to fight, especially considering the fact that the symbiote was not meant to be utilized with Brock’s DNA. On top of that, Venom had a lot more physical strength than Spider-Man, which when combined with his power to contort his body into a sort of organic webbing and weapons, made him extremely dangerous. The animalistic rage to kill and consume only increased further when Venom consumed the Carnage symbiote, giving him an even more gruesome and inhuman appearance.
Eddie Brock was also a somewhat troubled young man, seeking out the remaining sample of the Venom symbiote after being angered at Peter for discarding his sample of it. Given that the symbiote was only as moral as its host, it’s no surprise that the overwhelming bloodlust and hunger became the primary objective of the combined form.
The Maker, the evil Ultimate Universe figure who was once Mr. Fantastic, eventually managed to obtain the Venom symbiote. He manipulated it and finally gave it a true form of intelligence, albeit one subservient to the Maker’s own whims and desires. Given how dangerous the Maker is, this arguably makes the Ultimate Venom symbiote more dangerous than ever, but he was already a threat far beyond what he was in most incarnations.
