Vanessa Redgrave has been made a dame in the New Year Honours, and shared her gratitude at being bestowed the title.

The actress, 84, told PA: ‘I’m surprised and grateful to join this wondrous group of British artists whose work has inspired me and audiences the world over.

‘My generation fought for freedom of expression. Long may this remain.’

Dame Vanessa’s career has spanned over six decades and she was honoured for her services to drama.

She is a six-time Academy Award nominee, winning the Oscar for best supporting actress in 1977 for her role in Julia, starring alongside Jane Fonda.

Dame Vanessa was made a CBE in 1967 and was given the British Film Institute’s most prestigious accolade, the BFI Fellowship, in 1988.

The Bafta-winning actress was also awarded the Bafta Fellowship in 2010 for her work in the arts.

She was – quite literally – born into the arts, arriving on January 30 1937, while her father, Sir Michael Redgrave, was on stage in Hamlet at the Old Vic with Laurence Olivier.

Her mother, Rachel Kempson, was also an actress as were her siblings, sister Lynn and brother Corin.

The tradition has continued in her own children, with daughter Joely Richardson also becoming an actress, as well as late daughter Natasha Richardson, known for The Parent Trap and Maid In Manhattan, who died after a skiing accident in 2009.

Dame Vanessa’s son, Carlo Gabriel Nero, is also in the industry, working as a screenwriter and director.

As well as her career, which began with a West End debut opposite her father in A Touch Of Sun, Dame Vanessa has also worked tirelessly as an activist.

She took part in protests outside London’s Southbank Centre in a bid to prevent plans to cut 365 jobs following the fallout from coronavirus in August 2020, as well as joining Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester in October, in calling for better support for the cultural sector amid the pandemic.
