Valentine’s Day is nearly here and you may want to get your glad rags on to spice things up.
However, you may also be among the three quarters of women that get thrush in their lifetime, or the one in 20 who experience recurrent infections.
Thrush, a yeast infection caused by the Candida species of fungus, can cause itching, burning, and pain during sex or urination. It can also be exacerbated by the wrong underwear.
According to Canesten, ‘wearing very tight and synthetic underwear and clothes such as tight leggings can encourage the growth of candida because of the trapped moisture.’
Synthetic fabrics like nylon, polyester, rayon, spandex, mesh, lace, or satin are best avoided – which pretty much excludes you from the majority of lingerie deemed ‘sexy’.
Thankfully, you don’t need to put the health of your microbiome at risk to get your partner’s heart racing this Valentine’s.
Try these lingerie options that’ll have you feeling and looking your best, made with breathable fabrics to combat UTIs – and don’t forget to always pee after sex.
LilySilk Lace-Trimmed Mid-Waist Silk Underwear – £39
Real silk is a great option for breathability, and it looks fantastic too. Choose from a range of colours in these lace-trimmed knickers, that are antibacterial and skin-friendly.
Lovehoney Red Babydoll Gift Set – £20
As tight underwear can be the cause of thrush, go for something loose and easy to take off, like this babydoll set that ties up to tailor the fit. Your partner will love the easy undressing just as much as you.
Boux Avenue Lace and Microfibre Thong – £7
The soft microfibre of these helps avoid irritation, while a 100% cotton gusset keeps you feeling dry and fresh. Pair with your favourite bra or make your skimpy V-Day thong star of the show.
M&S Rosie Pleat and Lace French Knickers – £18
The loose fit of these flirty shorts means you should avoid the dreaded thrush after your Valentine’s session. The gusset is also 100% cotton, and there’s a matching camisole available for £29.50.
Stripe and Stare Diamond Hearts Set – £45
There’s nothing more suited to Valentine’s than hearts – except perhaps that this soft underwear set is made with 95% TENCEL Micro Modal natural fibres to keep you thrush-free and focused on romance.
Merri Intimates Midnight Black and Pink Cherry Shorts – £15
These flattering pants feature an elongated 100% organic cotton gusset and a super soft 93% organic cotton and 7% elastane jersey pant body – ideal for those who suffer with recurrent thrush and need to be careful with fabrics.
Bluebella Orla Wired Body Black – £44
The skin-tight mesh material on this might make you wince on first glance, but a 100% cotton gusset allows you to strut your stuff carefree. As it’s tight, you shouldn’t wear it for long periods… although we can’t imagine that’ll be a problem.
Intimissimi Silk Brazilian Briefs – 21
Alongside being made of silk, these stylish briefs are seam-free to banish VPLs from date night. A matching push-up bra is also available for £49.
Ann Summers Cherryann Chemise – £24
Perhaps you’d rather skip knickers altogether, but still want to get involved with showstopping lingerie. Go for a chemise or negligee to keep cool and look hot.
Pact Lace-Waist Brief – £17
If you want to get some saucy underwear that can be worn day-to-day (so sustainable), Pact’s offering is great. This pair is made from 95% Certified Organic cotton, with a touch of lace to add some intrigue.
Myla London Camellia Court Brief Blush – £20
The back and straps of these pretty knickers is made from luxurious silk, while the tanga fit flatters every body. Pair with the matching bra, which is currently on sale at £38.
