Scotland, England and Wales have been issued with a yellow weather warning for ice until Friday.

The next 24 hours are expected to be the worst with motorists being urged to take care on the roads.

Commuters are being advised to drive safely during the early hours as the ice will set in overnight.

The RAC said you should be checking the essential six things before heading off during the cold snap.

Brits hit with multiple Met Office warnings of 'severe' ice & snow today

Sharing tips of Twitter they said: “First of all, make sure you’re checking all the essentials before setting off on your journey.”

These include:

  • Fuel
  • Oil
  • Rubber
  • Coolant
  • Electrics
  • Screen Wash

The breakdown company also advised packing a scraper, de-icer, warm clothes, a blanket, first aid kit, food and drink, a power bank or a charger and boots with a good grip.

Snow could fall in northern Scotland with a weather warning for today suggesting up to four inches are predicted this week.

And a strong northerly wind is likely to cause drifting and blizzard conditions in some areas, weather experts suggested.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “We are in this pattern for seven days at least.

“We could see it continue for a while longer, there’s uncertainty in the evolution and how long it will last.

“However, the pattern for the next seven days is that it will remain cold and we will see double digit minus figures overnight in areas that are prone to frosts and areas where there is lying snow.”

The Highway Code has urged motorists to drive at a slow speed and in the highest gear possible when travelling in icy weather.
