The Jaguars decided to cut Tim Tebow on Tuesday ahead of the NFL’s mandatory 85-man roster deadline. Tebow’s release comes after he played just one preseason game at his new tight end position.
Jacksonville’s coach Urban Meyer admitted that parting with Tebow wasn’t easy, but he knew that he had to do it.
“It’s tough,” Meyer said to reporters. “We knew that it was an uphill battle for Tim. Players loved him. Locker room loved him. But it was the right thing.”

Indeed, it was. Tebow struggled in his lone game at his new position. He failed to make a catch and was targeted just once on 16 snaps.
More damning was his inability to block. Tebow whiffed on a couple of key ones late in the third quarter of the Jaguars vs. Browns game. On the first one, he spun off the defender and fell to the ground.
On the next play, he barely touched his defender before the man blew past him and tackled running back Dare Ogunbowale for a loss.
After that poor performance, Meyer felt he had to release Tebow, who played under him during their days together at Florida. How did Tebow take his release?
“Great,” Meyer said. “We talked last night, talked again this morning. As I did with the other guys.”
And will this mark the end of Tebow’s NFL career?
“I would guess it is,” Meyer said. “We didn’t get deep with that. Obviously, he’s his own man … elite warrior, elite competitor but he’s also 34 years old.”
It’s hard to envision another team taking a chance on Tebow, who hasn’t played a regular-season snap since 2012 when he was a quarterback for the Jets.
