Upgrade your Sony PS5 with more storage for lowest EVER price
No storage on your Sony PS5? With the humongous file sizes required for the latest blockbuster titles, it doesn’t take long to burn through the 825GB of hard drive space in both the standard PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition.
In fact, storage was one of the criticisms in our in-depth Sony PS5 review.
Thankfully, Amazon has the solution – slashing the cost of one of its best-reviewed SSDs. It’s now available at the cheapest ever price, with over 50% off the usual cost. For just £56.99, you can more than double the amount of super-fast storage inside your console. That’s less than the price of a PS5 game!
This huge price drop isn’t just generosity from Amazon, SSD prices have been plummeting for the last three months or so, thanks to supply chains and chip shortages beginning to return to normal after the widespread disruption caused by the global pandemic.
With a slew of major games set to launch in the coming months, including Final Fantasy XVI, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Mortal Kombat 1, Call of Duty, and many more, now is the best time to make sure you don’t need to delete any game or save data to find space.
Until now, the cheapest price for this 1TB PS5 SSD upgrade was £67.98 …that means you’ll pay £11 less than the previous cheapest price!
The Crucial-designed P5 Plus 1TB SSD meets the strict requirements for read and write speeds mandated by Sony. That means running games installed on this extra memory won’t be slower than the internal SSD.
For this level of performance, Sony requires all SSDs to have read speeds of more than 5500MB/s with the Crucial P5 Plus having up to 6600MB/s read speeds. That unlocks all of the highest performance from PS5-exclusive games, including Ray-Tracing, 120fps, and 4K Ultra HD resolution.
The 1TB version is the cheapest option available (and should add more than enough room for a growing digital library) but there is also a 2TB model on sale for £109 too. We’d recommend most people stick with the 1TB since that’s already doubling the amount of storage for games included in your console and it’s much more affordable.
This model doesn’t include a heatsink fitted to the SSDs out-of-the-box. If you want to buy the same 1TB model with a heatsink attached, you’ll need to pay £21 more for the same amount of storage.
That’s why our recommendation would be to buy the 1TB model without the pre-fitted heatsink at the lowest ever price, then buy an M2 heatsink and attach it yourself before fitting the SSD inside your PS5. A heatsink is required by Sony for all SSD upgrades.
Don’t worry – this process takes two minutes and is suitable for those without much experience in DIY upgrades.
For those who don’t know, a heatsink – usually built from a material like aluminium – is a passive heat exchanger that efficiently disperses heat to keep your SSD at an optimal temperature, no matter how long you’ve been playing on your PS5.
Bought separately, these cost under £10 and there are multiple options available for those who want next-day delivery with Amazon Prime. Check out the latest M2 heatsinks available on Amazon.
Unlike the Xbox Series S and Series X, which has a proprietary SSD upgrade that looks like a PlayStation One memory card that plugs directly into a port on the back of the console… Sony has opted for an open standard. The latter means players have much more choice and prices for 1TB upgrades tend to be much, much more affordable for PS5 owners compared with Xbox players.
But you’ll need to dig out a screwdriver and do a little more work yourself. With the incredible savings available on the Sony PS5-approved SSDs from Crucial at the moment, that sounds like a very good trade-off for players!
