UP: At the end of 1st intake round, 57% of total engg degree seats remain vacant – Times of India
A statement from the ACPC said that 29,014 students were selected in the first provisional merit list of whom 24,229 students had filled a total of 6, 55,062 choices for their preferred colleges. The statement said that 7,214 students have been allotted seats in 19 government and grant-in-aid colleges while 14,748 students have been admitted in 114 private colleges. Total number of seats in government run and grant-in-aid colleges is 11,411 and 38,810 seats in private engineering colleges.
These seats do not include management quota and NRI quota seats. The total number of seats with these two categories comes to around 64,000.
The statement says that those students who have been allotted seats will have to confirm their admissions by paying token fees by September 9.
Top Five Courses
Interestingly, seats are likely to remain vacant in popular courses also such as information technology, mechanical, civil and mechanical engineering courses. Emerging courses like artificial intelligence, which has around 1,000 seats in the state, only a few have been filled.
Experts say that around a decade ago the situation used to be different. They say that earlier the number of seats were less and the number of students was high which resulted in a rush for engineering courses. However, in the past one decade All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has approved quite many engineering colleges in the state but while engineering seats increased, preference of students changed. Experts say that more students are opting for medicine now than a decade ago. This is resulting in thousands of seats remaining vacant for the last few years.
