Unwanted dog who had never been groomed transforms with makeover

Before and after pictures show Barney, the adorable sheepdog, after his first ever trip to the groomers.

Barney was in desperate need of a haircut when he was taken to the RSPCA.

As he’d never been groomed, the Old English Sheepdog had dreadfully matted fur.

Before his hair was trimmed, it had grown into thick locks that covered his face and kept him from eating and drinking properly.

But after having a staggering 5kg of hair chopped off, Barney was transformed.

As well as a lack of grooming, the five-year-old pooch – who’s now being cared for at the RSPCA’s Millbrook Animal Centre, in Woking, Surrey – was always kept inside and not exercised.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: ‘Barney arrived in RSPCA care from a home in South London, where he hadn’t been exercised, socialised, or groomed for five years.

‘When RSPCA animal rescue officer, Chloe Wilson saw him for the first time, she was shocked by how matted he was.’

The poor boy’s fur was so badly matted that he had to be sedated for the vet to clip it off.

Chloe said: ‘It was so bad that the matted fur was covering his eyes, and it affected his eating and drinking.

‘Thankfully he had no ongoing health concerns as a result of the matting.

‘He looked like a completely different dog after his extensive grooming.’

Sue Walters, manager at Millbrook, said: ‘When Barney came into us, he was so shut down and scared.

‘But our team gave him lots of time to trust them and now he has come on leaps and bounds. He now really enjoys his walks with the people he knows and trusts.’

Now, Barney’s looking for loving new owners.

The pooch wants an adult-only home and owners experienced with Old English Sheepdogs that know about the breed – and who can keep up with his regular grooming requirements to make sure he never suffers like that again.

Sue added: ‘Barney needs a home that will go slow with him and give him time to settle and adjust to a new family and home environment.

‘He needs an understanding home where his new family realise that it may take a bit of time for him to bond with them.

‘Barney does like other dogs.

‘He has been through a hard time, and he is becoming such a loving dog and really does deserve the best.’
