University Open Days: are they worth it?
Attending an open day gives you the chance to hear from those already at the university talk about their experience, along with what you can expect. It may shed light on an important part of the university experience that you hadn’t considered, such as social life, travel, accommodation, and studying abroad.
It is never too early to attend an open day, it can offer you something to aim for at any stage of your high school years and can open your eyes to alternatives to university and gap years. I attended the open day with my sister, Alba Ferrin (a Year 10 high school student), and this is what she had to say, ‘Even though I’m not sure what careers interest me yet, exploring Royal Holloway has made me want to seriously consider university as an option after sixth form’. Open days can help you to solidify options for the future – whether you could see yourself at university or not.
Some people may not think that attending open days is worth it, thinking they can find any information they need on the website, but physically attending a university makes the experience more real. You have the chance to explore different degrees, find out more about university life, and ask students questions about why they decided to go down their paths, and ask staff about different pathways available. however, if physically attending an open day isn’t possible, most universities provide online open days through which you can gain the same insights about the university.
In a nutshell, it is worth going to university open days at any point in your study career. However, it is important to try to attend them a good amount of time before applying in order to avoid unnecessary stress during exam seasons. There is nothing to lose in attending them, whether in person or online, either way you will learn more about courses and pathways that will help you decide on your future.
