‘Unbelievably awkward!’ Johnny Depp was not happy with one Pirates of the Caribbean scene

In 2003 Disney introduced the world to Captain Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, The Curse of the Black Pearl. Johnny Depp played the swashbuckling rogue opposite Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom.

British starlet Knightley played Elizabeth Swann, who at the time was best known for Bend It Like Beckham.

Depp later revealed that he was not 100 percent happy with his kissing scene with Knightley, which took place in the 2006 sequel, Dead Man’s Chest.

He told TMZ: “Any kind of scene like that whenever you’re doing that sort of thing, it’s always unbelievably awkward, especially having met Keira when she was 17 years old.”

During the filming of Dead Man’s Chest, Keira was 21-years-old. At the time Depp was 42-years-old.

Depp went on to reveal how he coped with kissing his on-screen pal. He said: “But regardless of that it’s always awkward, so you kind of just making light of it. “She was a good sport and we just kind of did what we had to do, that’s the gig.” Although the Chocolat actor wasn’t thrilled by the scene, Knightley didn’t have much to complain about.

Knightley doubled down on her pleasure during another interview where she was asked about her on-screen kissing history.

Out of all the actors she has locked lips with in cinema, she pointed at Depp as her favourite.

She said: “Johnny Depp certainly wasn’t bad.”

Knightley joins the ranks of the many actors who worked with Depp that have nothing but praise for the American star.

Will Turner actor Orlando Bloom later commented on working with Depp across the trilogy of pirate movies.

He said: “He’s been one of the most private and stand-up people I’ve ever met.”

Mr Gibbs actor Kevin McNally recently praised the star as well, while adding he wants Disney to reinstate Depp’s position in the franchise.

He told Express.co.uk: “I’ve never seen a hint of any dark side to Johnny. I see a great humanitarian and a beautiful human being. I don’t see any impediment for him coming back and playing Jack Sparrow.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean movies are available on Disney Plus now.
