Uma Thurman’s biggest career regret: ‘Worst decision ever made’

Uma Thurman on ‘turning down Lord Of The Rings’ in 2017

Ms Thurman appears on The Graham Norton Show this evening. Joining her on the show will be Friends actress Courteney Cox, Rocketman star Taron Egerton, Hollywood sensation Minnie Drivers and Golden Globe winner Ariana DeBose. Lola Young will also perform her new single So Sorry.

Ms Thurman is appearing on the programme to promote the release of her new thriller series ‘Suspicion’.

The series, which premieres on AppleTV+ today, stars Ms Thurman as American businesswoman and media mogul Katherine Newman.

When Katherine’s son is kidnapped from a New York hotel, all eyes are focused on four apparently ordinary British citizens who were at the hotel on the night he was taken.

Their lives are turned upside down as they attempt to evade capture from the National Crime Agency and the FBI.

As the series goes on, they become increasingly suspicious of one another, and begin to question who is simply guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Suspicion marks yet another twist in the tale of Ms Thurman, whose film career spans an impressive 35 years.

She shot to stardom with her role as Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 masterpiece Pulp Fiction.

Ms Thurman reunited with the filmmaker to star as Beatrix ‘The Bride’ Kiddo in Kill Bill: Volume 1 and 2.

Yet her career could have taken a very different path had she not turned down the role of a lifetime.

She opened up on the decision during a 2017 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Mr Colbert welcomed her on to his show, and said: “Now I’m a big fan of yours, and I just have to ask you one question before we get started, because I’m also a massive fan of Lord of the Rings, which is no secret.

“I found out right before the show, is this true, that you turned down the opportunity to play Eowyn in Lord of the Rings?”

Ms Thurman squirmished, before replying: “Er, yes.”

Mr Colbert asked her why she turned the role down. She said: “It was a very long time ago, and I do consider it one of the worst decisions ever made.

“But I had just had my first child and, I don’t know, I was a little housebound.”

She added: “I think I was a little bit, it was a little unknown for me, but it’s really definitely a regret.”

The Lord of the Rings films were shot simultaneously and entirely in New Zealand, home of film director Peter Jackson, between October 1999 and December 2000.

Ms Thurman’s daughter, fellow actress Maya Hawke, had been born the year before filming began.

In a 2008 interview with MTV, she said she wished she had taken the role. She said: “Oh I truly wish I could’ve been able to take that plunge, and maybe I should’ve, but I just couldn’t at the time.”

Miranda Otto was instead cast into the role, and her character was introduced in the trilogy’s second film The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

Though Ms Thurman turned the prestigious role down, she enjoyed renewed success with Kill Bill.

By the mid-Noughties, she had a reported asking price of $12.5million (£9,190,625) per film on her head.

Since then, she has continued to establish a formidable reputation, starring in several film, television and stage productions along the way.

Uma Thurman appears on The Graham Norton Show tonight at 10:35pm.
