Ultimate Kindle rival may convince some users to ditch Amazon for good
Amazon announced the launch of its ultimate Kindle Scribe late last year with this device featuring a huge 10.2-inch display and a bundled stylus that lets owners scribble on the screen. It’s the online retailer’s most premium eReader but it’s now got some new competition from the team at Kobo.
The Kindle rival has just confirmed the release of a new device called the Elipsa 2E and it’s clearly taking aim at the Scribe.
This new eReader arrives packing a 10.3-inch glare-free E-ink touchscreen that offers oodles of space to read the biggest bestsellers.
Then there’s the pen, as just like Amazon’s gadget, the Elipsa 2E lets users write, make notes and doddle on that massive display.
Kobo is also promising that its stylus will feel just like a real ballpoint pen thanks to pressure sensitivity plus there’s the ability to choose the pen type, shade, line size and eraser size to suit your needs. You can even mark up PDFs and add annotations to any books you might be reading.

Just like the Kindle Scribe, there’s a full digital notepad so your scribbles can be saved plus there are folders and a search option to keep things organised and easy to find.
Other features on the Elipsa 2E include built-in ComfortLight PRO technology which helps make reading easy in all conditions. There’s also the ability to make things easier on the eyes at night to reduce strain.
Kobo is promising that its latest device is made from eco-friendly plastic and it should last for weeks on a single charge thanks to impressive battery life.
Sound enticing? The Kobo Elipsa 2E, complete with Kobo Stylus 2, will retail for £349.99 – that’s cheaper than the standard £359 price of the 16GB Scribe. It will arrive in stores from April 19.
“For over a decade, we have been innovating in the digital reading space with our best-in-class eReaders, expansive eBook and audiobook selection, and top-rated Kobo Apps. Kobo Elipsa 2E is the latest step in our journey to make reading lives better, bridging gaps between print and digital books, and offering an unparalleled reading experience,” said Michael Tamblyn, CEO, Rakuten Kobo.
“We understand that, for many of our valued customers, reading is more than words on a page. It is about engaging with ideas. Marking up, highlighting, capturing inspiration in infinite notebooks of almost magical capability using a versatile, intuitively-designed stylus – these are essential for capturing the thoughts and ideas that reading inspires.”
