UK tourist destination slammed as an ‘absolutely awful place’
Many of the UK’s top tourist attractions are in London. But while the Tower of London and National Gallery attract rave reviews, one destination left tourists less than impressed.
On Reddit, a tourist said that Leicester Square was the “most disappointing tourist destination in the UK”.
The tourist, ‘imminentmailing463’ wrote: “I don’t even really get why it’s a tourist destination, but nonetheless it is. And it’s an absolutely awful place.”
On Tripadvisor ‘Evlengr’ wrote: “Avoid at all cost, the worst London has to offer! Always overcrowded. Constantly loud and dirty. Make sure to watch all the broken glass.”
The pedestrianised square is in the heart of London’s West End and many tourists visit to go to M&M World, the Lego Store or to watch a street performer.
Another tourist ‘Jenny W’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Extremely touristy and underwhelming.”
On Reddit, a commenter ‘TruestRepairman27’ said the square had just “one defence” against the slander. They said: “The cinemas there are actually very good. If expensive.”
Leicester Square is home to a Cineworld, a Vue and an ODEON Luxe which is often described as one of the city’s most iconic cinemas.
The square often hosts film premieres, so movie fans might be able to spot some of their favourite stars there.
Despite the bad reviews, Leicester Square was actually extensively refurbished ahead of the 2012 Olympics.
The Square also has statues of several famous people and characters including Shakespeare, Charlie Chaplin and Paddington Bear.
Another person wrote on Reddit: “It’s a handy magnet to keep things like stag dos away from everything else in London.”
Leicester Square is the site of several nightclubs including ZOO Bar & Club and The Penthouse.
Tourists that want to avoid the square might still want to use the tube station to visit Covent Garden.
It’s also a good place to pick up discount last-minute theatre tickets at the famous TKTS booth.
