Uber looks to foster equal opportunity for students with disabilities

Mobility platform Uber has expanded the scope of its She++ initiative to promote diversity and inclusion beyond binary gender.

The programme was launched in 2019 to provide early-in-career opportunities for women to intern with the firm’s engineering teams, network with business leaders and get a glimpse into what a career in technology looks like. This year, the company is expanding the initiative to include people with disabilities, reflecting its commitment to equity.

The firm has seen a significant increase in the number of applications since the initiative began. This year, it received over 2,000 applications from top engineering colleges across India, indicating the growing demand for diversity and inclusivity in the workforce.

“According to WHO, around 16% of the world’s population experiences a significant disability, and creating equity and access for them is key to our mission. The response received for the She++ initiative in India this year makes us optimistic. We anticipate more reach and involvement as we continue to make progress and expand this initiative,” Ritika Khullar, head of diversity, equity and inclusion, Uber APAC, said.

“The inclusion of students with disabilities in the She++ initiative demonstrates our commitment to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive,” said Khullar.
