MANILA, Philippines — Three days ago, National University coach Jeff Napa challenged his wards to prove that they are one of the big boys in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament

“If you want to be one of the big boys, you have to beat them to prove that you’re one of them,” he told his players.

The Bulldogs heeded Napa’s call as they dealt the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons’ first defeat with a stunning 80-75 victory to end a seven-game skid on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

While the Bulldogs beat the Maroons in the preseason, Napa didn’t see that win as a big deal same with their championship run in the FilOil EcoOil Preseason cup.

But this time was different.

“Of course, this is a big deal. Because this is the (regular) season. Every game is must win. Every team, we have to prepare. We can’t take anyone lightly,” said Napa, who also drew impressive showing from Kean Baclaan, Jake Figueroa, and Steve Nash Enriquez.

“In order to compete, we have to keep up with the big boys for us to gain recognition. That was my challenge, if you want to become a member of the big boys, you have to challenge yourself to prove that you’re one of the big boys,” he added.

Omar John led NU’s  balanced attack with 16 points, nine rebounds, three blocks, three assists, and two steals to rise for the share of the league lead with their third win in four games.

Napa’s next challenge to his players is to stay consistent as NU tries to keep its momentum against Adamson on Saturday.

“The challenge is how to be consistent with the identity they have established today. Even if Tim Cone would coach this team but these players won’t have the desire to win, it will mean nothing,” he said. “I’m happy that the 16-man strong together with my reserves are performing well. Even us coaches, I can see that we push the players to their limits.”

Good thing for the NU coach, John and Enriquez vowed to achieve more for their team even after slaying the defending champion.

“It’s our goal to get this win because we want to gain respect from other teams, But we still have a lot to prove,” said Enriquez.
