Tzsyu blindsided as blockbuster fight called off

Tim Tszyu’s long-awaited fight against Jermell Charlo has been called off after the American moved up two weight divisions with the aim of taking on Canelo Alvarez.

The World Boxing Organisation had ordered Charlo to fight the undefeated Aussie for all four Super Welterweight belts by September 30, but Tszyu had feared Charlo would avoid the fight.

His concerns were proven correct when promoters PBC announced the Charlo-Alvarez fight seemingly out of the blue on Saturday morning (AEST).

In a further indication Charlo didn’t want to fight Tszyu, that fight will take place on September 30 and marketed as Undisputed v Undisputed.

The withdrawal will likely see Charlo stripped of his super welterweight title, upgrading Tszyu from interim to full champion.

Tszyu had retained the interim title with his first-round knockout of Mexican Carlos Ocampo on the Gold Coast last month.

It’s believed the Tszyu camp was blindsided by the announcement, finding out with the rest of the world through social media.
