Twitter working under govt pressure: Congress

The Congress has charged Twitter with “double standards” in blocking its official twitter handle and accused the social media giant of acting “under government pressure”.

The Congress criticism of Twitter came after its account and those of at least four AICC office bearers were blocked for either retweeting Rahul Gandhi’s tweet of a photo of the family members of an alleged Dalit rape victim. Gandhi’s twitter handle was the first to be locked.

“Members of the National SC Commission who visited the rape victim’s family on August 2 had tweeted photo of the family members, which was there on their handles till August 5. But when Rahul Gandhi visited the victim’s family members and tweeted their photos, Twitter blocked his handle! Twitter has similarly blocked about 5,000 accounts of our leaders and workers across India. Why is Twitter adopting double standards by working under the pressure of the government? If not, Twitter must immediately unblock the accounts,” AICC social media head Rohan Gupta told ET.

Around Wednesday midnight AICC had informed the media that Twitter had suspended handles of Randeep Surjewala, Ajay Maken, Manickam Tagore, Jitendra Singh and Sushmita Dev.

Rahul Gandhi on Thursday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming he will be “thrown” out of power by a “storm” created by the voices of the poor, Dalits, farmers and workers in the country. In response, AICC’s Dalit wing organised a protest.
