Billionaire Elon Musk revealed on Friday that Twitter will start paying content creators for the advertisements displayed in their replies, with an initial payment pool of $5 million.
The move to promote subscriptions and retain advertisers comes days after the newly named chief executive officer Linda Yaccarino took office.
“In a few weeks, X/Twitter will start paying creators for ads served in their replies. First block payment totals $5M,” Musk tweeted.
“Note, the creator must be verified and only ads served to verified users count,” he added.
Twitter Accuses Microsoft Of Using Unauthorised Data
This development comes at a time when Twitter welcomes Linda Yaccarino as its newly appointed CEO. Yaccarino, an advertising veteran from NBCUniversal, is expected to bring her expertise to revitalise Twitter’s advertising strategies and overall performance.
Twitter’s decision to compensate verified content creators for ads in their replies represents a major shift in the company’s approach to monetising its user base.
With this new initiative, Twitter aims to attract and retain influential users who can contribute valuable content and engage their followers.
Last month, Twitter removed the legacy verified blue tick from the profile of thousands of people, including celebrities, journalists and prominent politicians. Musk has made account verification a part of Twitter’s Blue subscription, a move he said would tackle the issue of bot accounts.
