Twitter down for thousands of users globally

Microblogging site Twitter was down for several users on Wednesday, according to Downdetector.com, a platform that monitors outages.

Number of outages reported for the social media site on Downdetector spiked around 3:30 pm IST and grew rapidly for about an hour.

The social media site was down for thousands of users globally including in India.

Cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru reported the most number of outages, according to Downdetector.

At first, users were able to tweet, and search for other people and tweets on the platform, but the timeline on the homepage was not visible for most people.

Users could see the following message on the homepage instead of their feed: “Welcome to Twitter. This is the best place to see what’s happening in your world. Find some people and topics to follow now”.

Soon after the outages, #TwitterDown started trending on the microblogging site, with users reporting outages and posting screenshots of the message displayed on the homepage. This is not the first time the social media platform has reported an outage in recent times.

Since Elon Musk took over the company in November last year and started cutting its workforce, the microblogging site has been experiencing outages frequently.

After reducing over 50% of roughly 7,500 employees, at microblogging site Twitter, Musk initiated another round of layoffs earlier this week. Twitter reduced at least 200 more employees as part of its latest round of job cuts, The New York Times reported.

According to the report, the job cuts took place Saturday night and impacted product managers, data scientists and engineers who worked on machine learning and site reliability. The team helped keep Twitter’s various features online, the NYT report said, citing people familiar with the matter.

The firm eliminated 50 jobs across engineering teams, including those supporting advertising technology, the main Twitter app, and technical infrastructure to keep its systems up and running, as per the report.
