Twitter Daily User | Twitter admits to overstating daily user numbers for three years

New Delhi: Twitter said it had incorrectly reported its average monetisable daily active users (mDAU) number due to an inaccuracy introduced three years ago. This comes at a time when the microblogging site is in the midst of a $44 billion acquisition led by Tesla founder Elon Musk.

Twitter overstated the number of daily users on its service for three years straight, overcounting by up to 1.9 million users each quarter,
technology website The Verge said.

“In March 2019, we launched a feature that allowed people to link multiple separate accounts together in order to conveniently switch between accounts,” the company said in a statement. “An error was made at the time, sucha that actions taken via the primary account resulted in all linked accounts being counted as mDAU.”

In the first quarter of 2022, that figure was 39.6 million for the US, and 189.4 million for the rest of the world, a significant increase compared to these figures last year. Twitter, as part of its user correction, published updated figures for Q4 2021, saying that it had 37.5 million mDAU in the US and 177.3 million internationally.

Twitter reported an operating loss of $128 million on revenue of $1.2 billion, both in line with its own guidance for the quarter. Revenue rose 16% year over year, with Twitter citing “headwinds associated with the war in Ukraine.”
