Twins’ Royce Lewis frighteningly lands on head after flipping over first baseman

A scary scene unfolded during Sunday’s game between the Twins and Guardians, as top Minnesota prospect Royce Lewis initially appeared to suffer a serious injury after doing a flip over Cleveland first baseman Gabriel Arias and landing on his head.

Lewis, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, hit a ground ball to third base in the bottom of the eighth inning, with Jose Ramirez fielding the ball and making an awkward throw that forced Arias to back up into the base path to catch it.

Lewis, however, was barreling toward the base and collided with Arias, doing a full front flip over him and landing on his head.

After landing on the ground, Lewis clutched his head and rolled over, staying down for several moments as fans and players looked on in hushed suspense.

Luckily, however, he ended up walking off the field on his own power and appears to have avoided a concussion or any serious injury.

After the game, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters that Lewis was “fine,” and that he just had a few abrasions.

Lewis, 24, was playing in just his sixth game of the season after returning from a torn ACL he suffered in his right knee in May 2022, just 12 MLB games into his professional career.

It was the second time in as many years that the former top pick tore his ACL in that knee, previously tearing it in February of 2021.

So far, Lewis has played in just 18 games for the Twins.

It remains to be seen if he will miss time after the scary collision on Sunday, though based on Baldelli’s comments, it appears unlikely he will need a stint on the injured list – or at least a long one.
