TUI holiday warning – Brits face shortage of hotel rooms this summer

TUI has warned holidaymakers of a shortage of hotel rooms this summer, and said to book now or risk missing out altogether.

Fritz Joussen, chief executive of TUI, also warned Brits to not expect any “last-minute discounts” this summer.

He explained that the shortage was not just due to demand but because people were booking longer holidays.

This increase is an average 9.5 day holiday compared to an 8.5 day holiday, which he said made a huge difference.

He told the Independent: “Although that doesn’t sound much, it is very big – we are consuming 12-13 per cent more accommodation.

“This will have an influence later in the season.”

“If you don’t book now, you will have difficulty finding a decent holiday.”

He added that this will particularly hit during the peak July and August summer holiday season.

The best way to avoid missing out on a holiday is to book it as early as possible.

But if you aren’t sure where or when you want to go, look at booking a package holiday that has free changes, so you can move it at the last minute.

This may incur extra charges, but means you can secure your trip before they sell out.

Martin Lewis also revealed how you can save money if your hotel goes down in price by cancelling the original booking and rebooking at the cheaper price.

It’s not just holidays abroad being affected by pent up demand, but UK staycation hotspots are also in short supply.

Visit Cornwall boss Malcom Bell previously warned anyone planning to visit the region may not have much choice unless they book sooner rather than later.

He told Sun Online Travel: “If you want to get what you want, book as early as possible.

“Lots of booking were carried over from last year so start doing research now.”
