Tsitsipas kicks off at Wimbledon umpire within minutes of Murray restart

Andy Murray’s match with Stefanos Tsitsipas did not take long to reignite once Thursday’s play resumed on Friday. After a break of fewer than 18 hours, the pair were back on Centre Court, and a cheeky challenge from Tsitsipas was denied by the umpire which sparked an angry reaction from the Greek.

The second-round blockbuster was halted on Thursday night, with a clean break made after three sets as the 11pm curfew closed in. By the time it was suspended, Murray had fought back from one set down to take a 2-1 lead, setting himself up for a mad dash to victory on Friday.

Tsitsipas was never going to make it easy for the Brit, however, and his bold on-court personality rapidly came to the fore after the restart. Triggering the outburst was Murray’s forehand being called in, which was not immediately challenged by the fifth seed.

Instead, he fired a backhand over to Murray which went long, and only after it was called out did Tsitsipas raise his hand to challenge Murray’s original shot.

“He can’t challenge this,” said three-time Wimbledon champion John McEnroe while on BBC commentary duties. “He’s trying to challenge the call after he missed his backhand. Not going to work there. It’ll get the fans into it.”

Meanwhile, Tsitsipas took his protest over to the umpire as he relentlessly argued his case, venting: “If the ball is out, it’s a really bad call from you, and it’s going to be out 100 per cent.”
